The Discover Challenge: Senses
The subtle but beautiful animal print pattern on this moth appealed to my sense of touch so much that it was all I could do to stop myself stroking it. The moth was looking for somewhere to rest during daylight. Nothing could deter it from selecting this wooden bench – not even a human being with a camera looming in to take its picture.

Impressions: Thanksgiving flowers

An alluring new Agapanthus claimed my attention at one of the UK flower shows earlier this year, even though it was almost buried in a sea of other cultivars. The subtle lilac and pink streaks along the backs of the petals and on the petal tips created a luminous, ethereal effect against the pure white.

Wordless Wednesday: Acer in Autumn
Castlerigg Stone Circle
Most visitors will thrill to the majestic setting for this stone circle. It’s on a natural plateau that overlooks a valley and is encircled by the Cumbrian hills and mountains. I was lucky to get the first shot with a blue sky: mist soon rolled in and the sky turned overcast.
A military jet zipping through the hills and valleys of this wild, out of the way place for training created interesting juxtapositions: flying vs earthed; motion and dexterity vs weight and mass; man made vs natural; contemporary vs megalithic.
