Candelabra Primulas For The Summer Solstice

Bright pink candelabra primula with yellow eye

I’m not sure why these pictures seemed suitable for a solstice celebration. Perhaps it’s the mix of sunlight and shade. Perhaps the primulas’ centres remind me of the sun.

While I love having four very distinct seasons and don’t favour one more than any of the others, I have a decided preference for bright nights. In Darwen, where I live, the sun rose today at 04.40 and will set at 21.42, giving a day length of 17 hrs and 2 minutes. You can compare your current day length here.

That seems a good reason to celebrate, even when I know the natural trajectory.

Happy Summer Solstice!

  1. There is a magnificent stature in these flowers, and maybe that is part of the solstice: the earth stands in salute at its brightest point. There is something very hopeful in these flowers; they seem to be looking in all directions with a wide-eyed optimism. I like that.

  2. We have a little more than 14 hours of daylight here in the Southern USA today. It is cloudy and raining so it is not suitable for a celebration.

  3. I confess that I’m rather fond of winter and its solstice; I don’t mind the dark nights. They’re made for candlelight, music, and books — and foods that no one ever would prepare in our hot and humid summers!

    1. If you can create a cosy atmosphere that way, it does make a difference. My biggest issue is liking to walk late afternoon/early evening, which is so much nicer in the summer.
