Bad Hair Day in the Garden

Garden at a flower show that looks like a face with wild hair

I’ve been looking through my pictures from Floriade Expo 2022 and whittling them down to just the decent ones. It’s not something I enjoy, particularly at the start. The trouble is, I tend to be a bit excitable when faced with gardens and lots of flowers, and to take more pictures than is convenient afterwards.

In any big batch, the whole gamut of bad pics usually appears, so at first glance, I often think, ‘Well, that visit was wasted.’ There will be shots of the gravel at my feet plus half a shoe; wind whipped, wildly out of focus flowers; pics my sweetheart has accidentally photobombed, etc.

Some, like the one I’m sharing, you can’t help wondering why you took, there was so little chance of them working out well. But luck plays a part in some of my best and some of my worst, and so it is here.

I’m contending that rather than being a bad picture of an unusual tiled garden I had intended to photograph, it’s a rather good portrait of a strange creature – a garden troll, if you will – with ruffled hair. You may also see a tiny face in the passing cable car.

After weeding out the bad ones, the visit usually seems to be rather less ‘wasted’ in terms of photography than I first feared, and so it is this time. I’ll share some of the ones that have made the cut when I’ve finished whittling.

  1. I like the
Wild hair vibe in this photo
And I can relate to the photos and needing to weed them out
Whew – it really is a process and this year – for the first time ever – i find I am clicking less photos and have less to weed thru

    1. I thought you were going to say you could relate to the wild hair, for a moment. I certainly can, most mornings! Well done for being more disciplined.

      1. Your comment reminded me of a blogger who doesn’t blog much anymore – Joey – and she said she thinks in her life she had more bad hair days than good

        1. Me too, though my sweetheart says the difference between me having a good hair day and a b ad hair day isn’t as big as I think! We have invented a word (sproingles) for errant curls.

    1. The amiable, baffled, goofy expression seems just right for what we read of trolls. Mind you, they may be very bright and have just had bad press.

  2. I laughed out loud when I read the paragraph about wondering why you took some of the photos. I have sat and pondered what I was trying to accomplish with some of mine. Then I hit the delete.

        1. I often do that with your posts! Now, get back to enjoying your travels. Mind you, if you’ve found a cool shaded spot under a tree within reach of wifi… I might let you off.

  3. You had me at “bad hair day.” I was still laughing about the Hadron Collider when I found this, and “apt” applies here too. I love both faces in this, and I think your muse nudged you on this. It’s hilarious, and hilarity is particularly in want right now. I think I see something of a Muppet in this, and Muppets are always lifter-uppers. Thanks!

    1. My sweetheart said it reminded him of Ernie and added, ‘very artistic – I think it’s one of your best’, but I was not sure how to take that bit!

  4. Some of my best photos have been happy accidents, and I always take a good look and see if there is anything “salvageable” You had me at “bad hair day” also. This is a photo worthy of a post celebrating its “history.”
