Lilium ‘Trebbiano’

Lilium ‘Trebbiano’ is a lightly scented Longiflorum Asiatic Lily. The classically-formed flowers are an unusual colour – pale lemon with hints of lime, particularly along the central veins. Dark anthers make a bold contrast against the petals and the angle of the flower gives it a hopeful look. Continue reading “Lilium ‘Trebbiano’”
Gallery of White Roses

“There is something quite special about white roses… they are all purity and light.” – David Austin
I’m sharing pictures of white shrub roses and rambling roses in eager anticipation of the peak flowering season for roses which is a couple of weeks or so away in my part of the world. As my sweetheart would say, bring it on! Meanwhile, I’ll let the roses do their own talking.

CFFC: Green Foliage

Most poinsettias are thrown away after Christmas. This one survived long enough to become ‘just’ green. Only the red stems give a hint of the colourful bracts that will be produced when the short days return. Continue reading “CFFC: Green Foliage”

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna, a UK native) is one of the first deciduous trees to leaf in spring. Its small, leathery leaves are lobed, rather like tiny oak leaves. Continue reading “Hawthorn Flowers: Cast Ne’er a Clout Ere May is Out”
Edible Plants

If I suddenly had to survive by foraging alone, though I have some knowledge of plants, I’m not sure I’d last long, especially if the whole of the country was foraging too. While one man’s meat is another man’s poison, anyone with an apple tree would surely be thinking themselves lucky. Continue reading “Edible Plants”
Star Shaped Flowers: Clematis ‘Darius’

Clematis ‘Darius’ may not be easy to find, but is certainly a beauty. With flowers as big as my outstretched hand, this is classed as an early, large-flowered clematis.
The flowers seem to have been painted with a star shape formed by a purple-pink stripe down the centre of each petal. Spidery dark purple anthers on creamy-white filaments add their patterns too. Continue reading “Star Shaped Flowers: Clematis ‘Darius’”
