Debie Deaton sculpts with wool, creating colourful, upscale toys and puppets like this little bug. I met her at Mississippi’s Chimneyville Arts Festival earlier in the month and was immediately taken by her lovingly made, character-infused creations. A whole booth of these animated figures, each one unique, but all united by her humorous house style, is a carnival.
I can only imagine the fun Debie’s household has when she’s testing out new ideas. Her work demands the longer post I’m planning for early 2019, but as today’s Ragtag Prompt is Play, how could I resist sharing this sneak peek?
While I admire the technique, it’s Debie’s characterisation that really cracks me up: I seem to read a short story in each expression. We live a long way apart but she’s such a lovely person, I can’t help hoping I met her for the first time, not the last.

yes, I think that bug has a story to tell. Its face is very expressive!
It’s a real skill to infuse so much personality into wool. Sorry I’ve taken so long to reply!
It IS the holidays!
This is great. What an uplifter.
I’m glad you liked it.
Well, what fun. That’s great!
It was great to see a whole booth of characters, many of them seemingly reacting to each other.
Love it!!
🙂
Very well crafted bug!
Her characters are beautifully made.
Whimsical and fun. Thanks for introducing this delightful character.
My pleasure! Sorry for the very tardy reply.
Not a problem. Sometimes life just moves too fast 🙂
So very cute and enjoyable. Makes me smile.
Me too. It would make a great ‘pet’ for an imaginative child.
Again, a vote of confidence in our species! If any one of us has this kind of imagination, then there’s hope for all of us! Thank you!
I’d love to see her illustrate Twelfth Night or A Midsummer Night’s Dream in wool.
I love this bug–cute but not cutesy, kind of edgy and uncertain. I’ll look forward to your post in 2019, where you tell us more!
Sorry you nearly had to wait until 2019 for an answer! I had some news that sent my thoughts elsewhere.
Makes me smile 😀
Debie told me she loves to make people smile.
Oh, fun!
🙂
