Nobody knows exactly what this ancient symbol means, but man, animals and, rarely, women with leaves sprouting from their faces appear as architectural motifs throughout Britain and Europe.
This was one of several trees at RHS Garden Hyde Hall decorated with modern, mask-like interpretations of a Green Man.
I like it. Is this painted metal?
I thought at the time it was wooden. It was at one of the RHS Gardens, Hyde Hall.
What a perfect Wordless Wednesday photo — he doesn’t need words!
He doesn’t look too talkative, either.
What a brilliant piece of art that is. I’ve never heard of Hyde Hall, just looked it up.
The RHS gardens are always well cared for. Wisley is my favourite so far, and I would visit often if it was nearer to home.
Actually, I thought it was a random pattern made from leaves, one of which had been drawn on – until I saw the comments!
I can see why that might be – the leaves are like camouflage. We saw a green lion today in a lady’s garden.
